AI Will Eventually Fade From View, By Design

I've recently been learning more about AI and the amount of information that is available on it is massive and hard to dig through. It seems like everyone is taking different directions in how it will be utilized. Whether businesses will decide to keep AI out, if they will only use some particular asset of AI that helps to improve their business model, or whether they will buy in completely and utilize AI to it's fullest potential.

The problem I see with AI is with cybersecurity. NIST has just published it's AI Risk Management Framework, which you can find here: https://csrc.nist.gov/presentations/2022/ai-risk-management-framework. The EU has also put out a framework for AI, and there are more and more regulations and laws being written about how you can use AI. However; what I see is the mega corporations are pushing their AI out to everyone they can. I was on an webinar on Monday with Microsoft pushing their Copilot for M365. I believe that mega companies like Microsoft and Google and Amazon will take this current opportunity to force every small business to use one of their respective AIs. These big corporations will work with government to stop any startups trying to get into AI. They will try to assure that they buy up everyone who is producing a good AI now to combine with their offerings and will become to only points from which we can get services.

With their growing market shares and their business model they will control what services small businesses can use for AI, how they will be allowed to use those services, and, by contract or licensing, force small businesses to hand over all of their information to their control. Don't believe me. Microsoft just last week used edge to put copilot on ever Windows Server 2022 out there. Yes they claimed it was an "accident" and that accident allows them access to all of those servers. And who's to say what kind of "accident" Microsoft, Google, or Amazon will have in the future?

Commoditization has become a familiar concept in the ever-evolving landscape of information technology. From personal computers to smartphones and extending into the enterprise realm with databases and cloud systems, the ability to swap these technologies based on price and support services has been well-established. But the question now arises: Is artificial intelligence (AI) reaching this point of commoditization? Opinions on this matter are diverse.

Commoditization refers to the process where products or technologies become widely available and interchangeable, leading to the democratization of these offerings. When a product or technology reaches this stage, it no longer provides a competitive edge to enterprises, similar to how a well-wired electrical system is essential but not a differentiator. AI tools and platforms, especially generative AI, seem to be heading in this direction. With their widespread availability at little to no cost and increasing use across the board, AI may no longer offer a significant competitive advantage.

Reflecting on this phenomenon, Nicolas Carr, author and former editor of the Harvard Business Review, highlighted two decades ago in his work "Does IT Matter?" that IT had become a utility that everyone is expected to have.
