In Her Own Words: Sharon Jones’ Dottie Rose Foundation targets technology’s gender gap
"The Dottie Rose Foundation is hustling to close the gender gap in technology by providing Charlotte, NC middle school aged girls the opportunity to connect the dots within the technology and computer science sphere to educate and inspire the next generation. This is a cause that is extremely close to my heart, as the value of education was instilled in me at a very young age by my Mama D, Papa, Mom and Dad. In fact, the foundation’s name is in honor of my Mama D, Dorothy Rose Moore, who inspired me to become an educator and also taught me the value of giving back to my community.
During my time as an educator I started to notice the female population in my middle school technology classes start to dwindle, and that worried me. I kept asking myself, “where are my girls?” and decided to get to the bottom of it. It was then that I discovered their lack of interest in technology was because they didn’t fully understand what the classes entailed and I set out on a journey to find tangible ways to connect tech to everyday use case scenarios. When young ladies are able to see connections between realistic actions and the application of technology the light bulb goes off and immediately their confidence increases.
