Career Development:  You are known across the organization for your expertise – not your job description. Increase your value throughout the enterprise by helping others meet their goals. The more value you create, the better your chances of not only advancement but an opportunity to expand your skillset in service to others – which of course, helps you too.  In addition, you’ll also build a bank of support for when you need assistance with your goals. Find out what’s important to peers and colleagues and offer solutions.

Chances are, you’re not a mind reader, so you’ll need a strategy. Start by paying more attention to colleagues during team meetings. Observe what get’s them excited or upset, obstacles their facing or goals around projects.  Take note of what you’ve observed and jot down ways you believe you can help.  Write down questions that will help you better understand the situation.  Schedule a time to share what you’ve noted, ask the questions, get the validation that you’re on the right track to shape the solution you plan to offer. Be supportive throughout the process without doing the actual work. Circle back to see how the solution worked.  Make sure to document your efforts to share with your manager or include in a performance review.
