GIS Data Remains at the Core of Future Emergency Responses

In fire, flood or other emergency response endeavors, every second counts. To ensure first responders arrive quickly at the correct destinations — and are prepared to immediately take action — having the most accurate, detailed location information is critical.

Today, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and rescue and emergency medical teams are utilizing geographic information system (GIS) technology, which can assess and relay spatial information from sources such as GPS and global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) to help inform their response in real time.

GIS-based tools typically encompass layers of resources that can range from key infrastructure component information to census data and medical center locations, offering an enhanced ability to pinpoint where 911 calls originate and determine the best reaction, based on what other elements are involved.
